Jehan Daruvala, Force India’s Protégé, Still Has A Long Way To Go

You know all those snarky remarks people used to make about how Dr Vijay Mallya had never hired an Indian driver to race for his team? Well, all those naysayers got their due this morning at the Sahara Force India hospitality suite.
The team and the industrialist, played host to their young protégé Jehan Daruvala, introducing him to the media and in a way, celebrating his 2013 British KF3 Championship win.
After all, he is the first Indian driver to have won this championship.
“He has shown us his talent and he is going in the right direction,” Dr Vijay Mallya said while introducing the young teenager. “We need to give him more experience, which we will, and hopefully, one day, we will welcome him into the cockpit of a Sahara Force India car.”
Daruvala started karting at the age of 10
and promptly fell in love with it. It all changed with the One From A Billion hunt, when he was chosen from over 2,000 karting enthusiasts. He joined the Sahara Force India Academy in 2011. The following year, Daruvala won the CIK FIA Asia Pacific Championship in Macau. The 2013 target was winning the British KF3 Championship.
The win however doesn’t automatically translate into an F1 seat. There is still a long way ahead and Dr Mallya believes that the best route is to climb the ladder the traditional way, and by performing in different categories to truly demonstrate Daruvala’s capabilities. “The programme will be followed. We are not going to rush into something, which would be to his detriment. I think we are sitting on something really solid here. Like McLaren nursed Lewis, we will nurse him along correctly.”
Daruvala has been trained and mentored by the best – karting legend Terry Fullerton. It is something that has held him in good stead, through the races, the wins, and even the British weather. “I am proud that he (Fullerton) is my driver coach. He has given me a lot of self-confidence…I became faster through the year and gradually became better. The most important thing is consistency and I had consistent races through the year. Terry also helped me understand the feel of a kart in different conditions,” he says.
There is no doubt that the 15-year-old is walking the right path. And Dr Mallya says he is open to finding more talent and new drivers. But he also has a caveat: “They have to show the same talent and commitment that Jehan has shown. We selected three from the hunt, and Jehan is the only one surviving, and he is doing really well. The other two dropped out. Our commitment to find more and more Indian drivers to eventually get into Formula 1 remains.”
